"There are a lot of advantages to being deaf," Kalamazoo College freshman Tyler McFarland said. "You don't get a lot of distractions. A major disadvantage I've been able to overcome is that you really can't hear people cheering for you.
"For example, Michael Phelps says the crowd helps him swim faster, but I can't hear any of that, so it's all motivation by myself when I swim. People will be on the side cheering for you, but the way I swim, I can't see them."
